" I continue to be an artist by trying to translate the wonder I have always seen into a physical form ."     - Corwin Levi

 CORWIN LEVI

On November 4 the Student Art League presented multi-media artist Corwin Levi as a part of the ongoing speaker series. It was great to listen to him speak about his work and how his art transitioned to where he is today. Levi’s presentation, slide by slide displayed this evolution starting

with high school artwork, beginning with notebooks.

As a kid in high school and his first few years of college, and unlike any other notebooks I’ve seen, Levi had covered every inch of a page with either days worth of notes and detailed doodles that extended all away around the margins. After having seen this we had an understanding of how meticulous and obsessive of a worker he was. Almost all his current work reflects that obsession.

In an attempt to form a financial safety net, when Corwin graduated art school decided to go to law school and subsequently practiced law for several years. Not surprisingly though he found his way back to art where he used art residencies to allow him to travel. Levi’s art extends from miniature sculptures of flowers exploding from the cracks of the walls, to the souls of books escaping their bounds, and now transparent books all on one page.

Now Corwin Levi is working on a collaboration piece with artist of all different genres, the one requirement for this is to pick a story from the Brothers Grimm tales and tell the tale through their art style whether it be sculpture, painting, mixed medias and music. Corwin Levi is an interesting and impressive artist because of his obsession, his attention to detail and his openness to collaboration.
